Green Flamingo Night Club

Name: Green Flamingo Night Club
Neighborhood: French Quarter
Address: 814 St. Louis Street, New Orleans LA CSA
Type of business: Night club
Owner: Fay Dufresne

Lewis Dufresne operated a distillery out of a brick two story building on St. Louis street during the Yankees’ foolish experiment with prohibition. Though the quality of Dufresne’s mash liquor was quite poor, the business was profitable thanks to Dufresne’s business partner, “Handsome” Pete Doswell, a barge captain who transported the liquor upriver to dry Kaskaskia, Illinois.
Dufresne passed away quietly in his sleep on November 1st, 1932, shortly before the repeal of prohibition. His widow, Mrs. Fay Dufresne, converted the prime French Quarter real estate (as well using the remaining cache of her husband’s liquor) into a night club she named “The Green Flamingo”.
The Green Flamingo is a modestly popular spot, attracting a steady clientele, a mix of regulars and tourists, and welcomes all races. The club hosts live jazz most nights (though mostly B level acts that can’t get on the stage at the King Fish Club).
The Green Flamingo is best known for being the location from which Tom Costantino frequently operates the Churchill Downs Italian Lottery.
